Understanding the Dangers of Online Dating

Friday, January 4th, 2008 by Raymond

The Internet can definitely be a great resource if you are looking to find that someone special, but there are also dangers of online dating that you are going to want to be aware of so that you protect yourself and stay safe. There are a few dangers of online dating in particular that you are going to want to watch out for.

Scam Artists

One of the biggest dangers of online dating is scams. Most likely you have heard stories before about people who went on online dating sites to try and find love or a friendship and who ended up getting conned. More often than not these cons involve money but they may involve sex or other things as well.

There are many con artists out there working the different dating companies around the world, and with the Internet it is now easier than ever for these scam artists to con people. This is because you have more anonymity over the Internet, thereby making it easier than ever for them to play their little games.

You can spot these scams and avoid one of the biggest dangers of online dating however, as long as you are careful. If someone seems too forward or too eager to get to know you or to meet you, then you should be wary. If they ask for your email, telephone number or address, you should probably just stop talking to them altogether.

Any normal online dater will be aware of these sorts of rules and will not ask you such things so you will basically always be able to spot a scammer when you find someone is asking you these sorts of questions.

Meet in a Group or in Public

Another of the biggest dangers of online dating involves not letting your guard down. At least make sure that you meet their friends and coworkers first, so that you can get to know a bit more about them and this also ensures that you can crosscheck some of the things that you know to be true about the person.

As long as you proceed with caution and take the necessary steps to keep yourself safe, you should not have any problems with your online dating experiences and who knows, you may just find that special someone once and for all. There are definitely dangers of online dating but there are also ways to avoid them, and so you should not be hesitant to go through online dating companies just because of these possible dangers.

the dangers of online dating

How to Avoid the Dangers of Online Dating

Almost everybody who has tried meeting people on the internet has something to say about the dangers of online dating. Going online to communicate with other people is a learning process, and sometimes things happen that deter them from trying again when they make a wrong turn somewhere. The dangers of online dating are well known to those who’ve tried it before.

Mr. or Ms. Wrong

Probably the most common of all the dangers of online dating is meeting the wrong person for you. From a common misunderstanding, to misreading their signals, meeting wrong persons is commonplace in the online dating scene, and this type of problem can easily go from simple to complex.

Meeting other people online is a risky proposal, but with the help of dating sites, these undesirable situations are lessened by a considerable degree. An example would be to assume things about the other person from things that they say on their pages, that they share exactly the same traits or interests as you do, but the dangers of online dating manifest when it turns out that they do share some common interests or traits with you, just not as much as you would like.

Making a wrong move when it comes to viewing and communicating with other people through dating services happens often enough that some feel it’s not worth the effort to go out and find someone online who could probably be the right person for them. To steer clear of the dangers of online dating, there are just some simple guidelines to follow, so that everything would turn out fine in the online dating experience.

Details, Details

It would make good sense if you receive messages from someone who’s interested in you, or when you browse around the website and see somebody that you’re interested in, and that you find out about that person first before you take the first step of communicating with them. Read their profiles on their pages first, and don’t hesitate to absorb all the details about them that you can, so you’re able to see which really are those that you think would make a good match for you.

Finding the right person online is a good option for everyone. It just takes patience, and some good old fashioned common sense to find out who would likely have the right chemistry with you, and don’t be afraid to trust your intuition. This would be a great help in staying away from the dangers of online dating.

Take care of your equipment and systems before you head out into the Internet realm. You need to have a firewall and anti-virus protection for your email and for when you search websites and interact online. At the bare minimum, you may want these two solutions that are offered at no charge to home computer users (i.e. not for commercial use):

Free Firewall Download: ZoneAlarm www.zonelabs.com
Free Anti-Virus Download: AVG Anti-Virus www.grisoft.com

Protect Yourself

Take care of yourself, too, by choosing appropriate dating sites. Seek and choose a reputable online dating service. How? Begin by asking around with friends, neighbors, co-workers and others you may know who have tried online dating, and see which places they recommend. In addition, search ìonline dating servicesî and keep a notebook of their URLs or website links, the fees, rules and regulations, complete contact information of each and any other useful information that spikes your interest. Then compare each place. Try only those places where you feel safe. Avoid the others.

So take care. Arm your computer ñ and yourself- with the correct tools and knowledge!
