If you are at a point where you are thinking about proposing, congratulations! This is such an exciting time, but it can be overwhelming to know where to start. So, we have broken it down into 3 simple tips to make the whole process much easier and more enjoyable. So, sit back, relax and prepare to learn everything you need to know about proposing to your partner!
Set A Budget
When you are thinking of proposing, the first and most important thing that you need to do is set a budget. The last thing that you want to do is spend more than you can afford on a ring and then have the whole experience overwhelmed by money concerns. So, think about how much you can realistically afford and how much more you would like to save before you get the ring and propose.
Tradition says you should spend around 3 months salary on a ring, however this is very outdated. The most important thing is the gesture behind the proposal itself, so be sensible when it comes to how much you spend. If you don’t have any savings yet, also make sure you are realistic about how much you can save without it meaning you can’t continue to live your life.
In short, everyone’s budget for an engagement ring will be different, but the main thing is you are realistic. When you know how much you can afford to spend, it will make choosing a ring (our next step) much easier.
Choose A Ring
Now that you have a budget in mind, it’s time to choose a ring. We know this step might be overwhelming, but there are a few things you can do to make it easier.
Start by deciding on the broad type of ring you would like. Perhaps you want to go for a classic modern ring. Another option is a vintage engagement ring with a story behind it. Classic modern rings are beautiful, however vintage engagement rings are stunning and you get much more for your money as they are VAT exempt. To make this decision, go to a modern jewellery shop and then a vintage one and see which ones you prefer.
Next, decide on the metal for the ring. The two most popular choices are gold or platinum, so once you have decided, your options will be halved! Now you know the metal, it will be easier to decide on the gemstone. Diamond is the classic choice, but ruby, sapphire and vintage emerald rings are especially beautiful and are also meaningful!
By this point, you should have quite a clear idea of what you want and this should make your search much easier. If not, work with a jeweller and they will be able to give you some advice on the best direction based on what your partner likes.
Decide On A Location
So, you’ve got the dream ring, now it’s time to decide on a location! If somewhere doesn’t automatically come to mind, there are two things that you can do that will always go down a treat. Either, choose somewhere that means a lot to you as a couple, or choose somewhere that your partner has always wanted to go. For example, you could go on holiday to the place you had your first trip as a couple or you could go away to Ireland for the weekend because your partner has always wanted to visit there.
The proposal will be a special moment no matter where you choose, but making it meaningful will make it all the more special for you both.
